DVD holder has something up its sleeve

If you're drowning in DVDs and need a way to store them, a new product by a San Leandro woman's firm may fill the bill.

The DiscSox DVD Pro Sleeve, which costs $26.95 for a 25-pack, resembles a book jacket and holds the materials that come with the DVDs, unlike most such sleeves.

"I talk to customers day in and day out and they were looking for sleeves that held everything, the wraparound artwork that comes with the DVD and the disk itself," said Vanessa O'Connor of San Leandro, vice president of sales and marketing at MMDesign Studio International, the company that makes the containers.

The product launched last week and sold 10,000 sleeves in four days. The company's other core product, a CD sleeve, sells about 1,500 sleeves a week.

Most DVD sleeves resemble envelopes and only hold the disks. The DiscSox sleeve is made of vinyl and opens like a book.

The artwork that comes with the DVD slips into the transparent sleeve with the movie title showing. On the inside, the product resembles a notebook with pockets. The company also sells trays for storing the sleeves, priced at $11.95 for a tray that holds about 75 DVDs.

Marcel Manzardo, the company's president, created MMDesign Studio's flagship product, a CD holder, in 1991.

"The inspiration came to him when he reached up to grab a CD and all these jewel cases came tumbling down on his head," O'Connor said.

O'Connor suggested that the president, who is an engineer, design a DVD holder after getting a number of requests from customers.
